Meet a Mom: Julianne Slade, Founder of The NorthShore Nurse

Hi Julianne. Please introduce yourself. Where are you from originally? What city do you live in now? What brought you here?

I am originally from Rockford, IL- 815 born and raised! After college, I settled in Chicago until the pandemic made my husband and I crave more space- both indoors and outdoors! We first moved to the suburbs on a whim (before kids or even a dog!), then two years ago found our long-term home in Highland Park. By then we had one baby and another one loading, so more space was a must.

Tell us about your children and do brag away!

I have a soon-to-be three year old, and a one year old. They are 20 months apart and couldn’t have more different personalities. My oldest is sweet, sensitive and obsessed with princess dresses and lollipops. My baby is fierce, loud and hungry – she loves to sleep, eats everything in sight, and happily finished her sister’s leftovers. I love them so much and feel fortunate to be able to be home with them on Tuesdays and Thursdays, soaking in every little milestone.

What are one or two fun or interesting things to know about you?

I love indoor plants. These were my first babies, and I tend to 20+ of them each week. I also love CorePower Yoga and try to go at least twice a week.

Time has been limited these days, but I never pass up a good bargain! I love thrifting, exploring estate and rummage sales, and honoring all things vintage.

Those are all my happy places, too! What are your favorite North Shore places, spaces and eats to frequent with family, date night, hang out, etc.?

Abigail’s American Bistro in Highland Park is our favorite restaurant in the North Shore thus far! The Chinese BBQ Ribs are an absolute must. We love sitting at the bar and enjoying the lively, city-like vibe there. That Little French Guy in Highland Park and their almond croissants are a must for any new visitor to our home. I’ve yet to have a pastry there that disappoints! Pomeroy in Winnetka we love for a date night, and the Bolognese pasta from Mino’s in Winnetka is our go-to takeout guilty pleasure.

Any good reads or tv shows you’ve binged lately?

We recently watched several episodes of The Bear – it’s so interesting to see the behind the scenes of restaurateur life, and catch glimpses of real Chicago eateries, though it was way too stressful to watch at times!

I’m currently reading Keep the Memories, Lose the Stuff by Matt Paxton. It is taking me awhile to get through as there never seems to be enough hours in the day. I am loving it so far as he emphasizes giving older adults the space and opportunity to share the stories behind cherished items- honoring memories rather than letting things accumulate and gather dust.

Your mantra?

It’s not going to get done by itself! And “In a gentle way, you can shake the world” -Gandhi

It’s time to get down to business. Please introduce your business, The NorthShore Nurse.

The NorthShore Nurse is a private duty nursing and nurse case management company dedicated to supporting older adults along the North Shore. We help clients age in place and navigate through an often complex and impersonal healthcare system.

That is such a needed service. What are your qualifications?

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marquette University driven by my desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I am certified and trained by two distinct organizations to best support those exhibiting Dementia. I hold not only an Illinois nursing license, but also a nursing business license issued by Illinois Department of Public Health, maintaining full compliance with its rules and regulations.

What inspired you to start The NorthShore Nurse?

I have always had a special place in my heart for older adults beginning with the deep bond I shared with my grandparents. During my time working at the hospital as a bedside nurse, I especially loved caring for geriatric patients. That path eventually led me into Eldercare where I took on hybrid, demanding roles at two different home care agencies. Through those experiences, I realized I could build something of my own in order to do what I love, while still maintaining the autonomy and flexibility needed to raise my girls.

Can you share a bit about the services you provide and how they support families in our community?

I provide skilled nursing services, including medication management, wellness checks, pillbox fills, injections, ostomy care, wound care, g-tube administration, and more. My nurse case management services go beyond clinical care to include all things care coordination – patient advocacy, accompaniment to doctors’ appointments, senior resource navigation, oversight of healthcare teams, education, and consistent communication with loved ones.

What sets your approach apart when it comes to private duty nursing and case management?

My goal is to guide clients and families through healthcare with consistency, reliability, and heart. I believe the best outcomes arrive from having the same trusted person by your side – someone who takes the time to truly know you and your needs, checks in regularly, notices changes from visit to visit, and acts on them with urgency and care. When that person is highly organized, unafraid to bring in trusted resources to meet every need of the client, and treats each and every client like their own family member, care goes above and beyond.

What’s the process like when working with you? Is it a bit like the concierge approach?

My services are tailored to each client’s unique needs and preferences. I start by meeting with the client and/ or their loved ones to understand their exact needs. From there, I provide a comprehensive head to toe nursing assessment and develop a personalized care plan based on their specific needs. I then collaborate with all physicians, care providers and family as needed to ensure everyone is aligned and working toward the same goals.

Essentially I am a concierge nurse and care manager, however, I have no annual fee. Services are billed hourly after they are provided, offering flexibility and transparency.
