Spring’s finally poking its head through the Chicago winter, and you know what that means – time to fling open the windows, give your home a good scrub, and breathe new life into the space. After months of stomping mud, snow and street salt into your floors from the kids’ boots, your home’s floors have taken a bit of a beating. And let’s be real, while giving your entire house a deep clean is top of mind for every North Shore mom come spring, there’s one critical part that often gets either overlooked or mishandled: your area rugs.

Whether you’ve got a durable runner in the mudroom to hide all the chaos, a plush custom carpet in the playroom for your kiddos to play on, or an antique, hand-knotted piece in the dining room that’s been passed down through generations, your area rugs are basically just giant air purifiers. They soak up everything.

So here’s the real lowdown: our comprehensive guide to spring cleaning your rugs, and how to avoid all the mistakes that can ruin your favorite pieces.

The Grimy Truth About Your Wool Rugs

Most high end rugs are made of wool, which is a pretty phenomenal fiber, to be honest. Wool’s got a natural structure that kinda acts like a pocket, holding onto dirt, pollen and tiny bits of grit that you can’t even see. Because wool is opaque, it hides all that dirt incredibly well. Your rug might look spotless to the naked eye but it might be harbouring pounds of abrasive dirt deep within its foundation.

When you and your family walk all over the rug, this embedded grit acts like sandpaper on the fibers. Over time, this friction cuts the wool down, leading to bald spots and irreparable wear. Learning and applying proper rug maintenance will ensure your rug’s overall condition and longevity. Vacuuming is super important for weekly maintenance, but a standard vacuum just isn’t powerful enough to pull dirt from deep within a densely woven rug. A professional wash is the only way to get that hidden layer of soil out and keep your rug looking its best.

Why Using a Steam Cleaner on Your Rugs is a Recipe for Disaster

We see a lot of people do this – they hire a wall-to-wall carpet cleaning company to use a steam wand on their loose area rugs. And it’s a total disaster.

Most wall-to-wall carpeting is made from synthetic fibers and is designed to be surface-cleaned only. Fine area rugs on the other hand are made of natural fibers and need to be treated completely differently. When you use a steam cleaner on a wool rug, it forces hot water and harsh soaps into the fibers. And because the rug is sitting flat on your hardwood floor, the moisture has nowhere to go.

This leads to a whole host of problems. The foundation of the rug can stay wet for days, creating an ideal environment for mildew and dry rot. The high heat can also cause the natural dyes in your rug to bleed and run together, completely ruining the design. Lastly, the soaps used by these companies strip the natural oils right out of the wool, leaving it brittle, dull and super prone to re-soiling.

The Proper Hand Washing Process

So you’ve got a rug that needs cleaning – here’s how to do it safely and effectively. First, the rug needs to be taken out of the home and taken to a facility that’s specifically equipped to handle this. At Rouzati Rugs, our process is a modern take on the traditional river-washing techniques that have been used for centuries.

First things first, you need to dust the rug. That means using this special equipment to gently vibrate the back of the rug and shake all the dry, embedded dirt out – the kind that your vacuum just can’t get. Next, the rug is submerged in cool water and washed with special shampoos that are pH-balanced and safe for wool. And finally, the rug undergoes this rapid extraction process to get all the water out and is hung in a climate-controlled drying room to dry completely – slowly and safely.

Tackling Pet Stains and Odors

We love our pets to bits, but they can be a real handful when it comes to our floors. Urine, in particular, is one of the most damaging substances a rug can come into contact with.

When an accident happens, the urine goes in as an acid but dries into a tiny, super alkaline crystal. These crystals latch onto the wool fibres and can’t be removed by a simple spot clean or some over-the-counter spray. In fact, a lot of those off-the-shelf pet stain removers use bleaching agents that can permanently strip the colour right out of your rug. A full-immersion wash is the only way to break these crystals down and get rid of them for good.

Restoration and Preventative Repair

Spring cleaning is also a great time to get a close look at your rugs and catch any minor damage before it turns into something a whole lot more expensive. The ends and sides of a rug are the first signs that it’s going to start falling apart. If the fringe starts to unravel or the side stitches start to come loose and pull away, you’ve got a serious problem on your hands – the whole thing could end up unwinding like a top. A few loose threads can quickly turn into a massive hole if you have one of those high-powered vacuum cleaners zooming around or if someone – or something – happens to come stomping by.

Getting those edges tidied up and rebound by an expert can be a simple fix that prevents the whole thing from coming apart at the seams. We also handle the really big jobs – like re-weaving big holes from those pesky puppies or moths that seem to have a taste for your priceless heirlooms – so your treasured family pieces can be handed down to the next generation.
