Meet a Mom: Standing the Test of Time with Diana Gran, Founder of Diana Gran Portraits. - Chicago North Shore Moms

Hello friendly faces! It’s that time of the week! We’re back with a new Chicago North Shore Moms spotlight brought to you in part by Mary Gifford of Gifford Law. This week we’re thrilled to introduce you to the lovely Highland Park Mom of four children and the talented and ingenuitive portrait photographer, Diana Gran.

As a professional portrait photographer, Diana empowers women to exist vibrantly in photographs. Her work captures their essence, connections, and legacies, documenting the multifaceted roles they play as mothers, professionals, and creatives. Diana’s unique portrait style brilliantly creates timeless, tangible artwork that celebrates their journey, family bonds, and unique stories, preserving these moments for today and future generations. In Chicago North Shore Moms exclusive interview with Diana Gran, she goes into detail about what makes her services and timeless finished product a luxury experience for the whole family, her portraiture experience and local favorite stomping grounds. Welcome, Diana!

Hi Diana! Please introduce yourself. Where are you from originally? What city do you live in now? What brought you here?

Hi there! I’m Diana Gran, originally from the sunny shores of Acapulco, Mexico. At 18, I felt a strong pull towards growth and new experiences, prompting me to take a leap of faith and move to the USA in search of education and opportunities. It was quite the journey—I packed everything I owned into a suitcase and worked three jobs to support myself through college. However, it wasn’t until I became pregnant with my first child that I discovered my passion and love for creativity and photography. Now, I call Highland Park home, just a few blocks away from my full service portrait studio.

Tell us about your wonderful family!

Absolutely! I have four incredible children ages 13, 11, 9, and 7. Respectively, they are not just my kids; they’re my teachers, and greatest sources of inspiration and wisdom. Their old souls and boundless curiosity remind me to stay grounded and embrace the beauty of each moment. And let’s not forget our beloved pets, Coco the dog and Smokey the cat, they add an extra layer of joy to our lives.

What are one or two fun or interesting facts to know about you?

One fun fact about me is my love for immersing myself in different cultures. Every year, my family and I embark on a month-long journey to a new country. I love learning and immersing in different cultures, traditions, food, and local life. Last summer, we had the pleasure of exploring Oaxaca, Mexico. This trip was a dream for my artistic soul and culinary passions. I was immersed in hands-on artistic experiences, and even learned the intricate art of making mole, from grinding chillis to blending spices, each step steeped in tradition. Traveling, for me, is about connecting with a culture’s essence—its music, its people, and especially its food. Oaxaca’s vibrant cultural heritage left a lasting impression, and I’m excited to see where our next adventure will take us!

Your mantra?

My mantra is “DONE is better than perfect.” As a recovering perfectionist, I’ve come to understand that perfectionism stifles creativity. Embracing imperfection allows me to move forward and create freely.

What are your favorite North Shore places, spaces and eats to frequent?

As I was typing this list, I just noticed that I tend to live/work/dine within 15 minutes of my home. Here are some of my favorite spots in Highland Park & Highwood:

La Plancha Loca: Tacos are my love language, and this place serves up some of the best! Azteca tacos, and ramen Birria are a must!
Indus: It just opened up downtown HP, and I can’t get over how amazing this place is. Progressive Indian dining a few blocks away from me, someone pinch me.
Love That Spice: When I’m craving a wellness boost, a mushroom coffee, ginger shots, and healing tea blends from here always hit the spot.
Luna Rosa Wine Shop: For those special occasions or just a cozy night in, their carefully curated wine selection is unbeatable. It is such a cultural experience to be in this store. Did you know all their wine is from women-owned/small producers and organic/sustainable/biodynamic?
PiXca: When it’s time for a memorable date night, this restaurant always delivers.
Mil Colibrís: The chorizo burrito, cafecito and conchas and churro donuts are just delicious.
Soulshine: When I’m in need of candles, incense, or crystals, this is my go-to spot for all things soul-nourishing.
Doña Patys in Highwood is the place to go when I am craving that truly authentic Mexican flavors.

What gets you through a tough day?

Definitely my first stop is to grab a wellness drink from Love That Spice. Taking a walk in nature usually helps me clear my mind. I love to burn White Copal to infuse my space with positive energy. Taking a tea break alone or with close friends instantly brings me back to life. During the hardest times, volunteering and surrounding myself with inspiring people help me recharge my spirits.

Let’s get down to business. Your studio sounds like a haven for creating beautiful portraits. What inspired you to open Diana Gran Portraits, and how do you ensure your studio provides an inviting and comfortable environment for women and their families?

Opening Diana Gran Portraits stemmed from my passion to create a serene and creative sanctuary where women and their families can feel completely at ease. I wanted a space where they could relax and be themselves, allowing us to capture their genuine emotions and true essence.
To bring this vision to life, I collaborated with HEIMA Design House to design a versatile studio. My studio accommodates a variety of photoshoots, from fine art portraits to commercial and creative sessions, offering a range of beautifully curated settings. The studio is filled with professional studio equipment but also with small thoughtful details like soothing candles, gentle music, and the comforting scent of incense, which all contribute to a welcoming and tranquil atmosphere that sparks creativity.

But it’s not just the equipment, decor and ambiance that make Diana Gran Portraits special. The unique energy of our 125-year-old building, with its high ceilings and a blend of natural and professional artificial light, adds an extra dimension to the portraits we create. I focus on using both lights and shadows to tell authentic stories through our portraits.

Diana Gran Portraits is more than just a studio—it’s a sacred space where creativity flourishes, authenticity is celebrated, and the portraits we capture are preserved to last a lifetime and beyond.

Capturing authentic and timeless images is no small feat. Can you walk us through your process for creating these memorable portraits?

Capturing authentic and timeless images is the goal and a process that begins long before the photoshoot. My approach to photography is to begin with the end in mind, understanding that we’re not just creating photographs but crafting art that reflects the essence of each client.
It all starts with a complementary discover call to discuss your vision and purpose for the photoshoot. This sets the stage for a 60-minute design consultation at either your home or my studio, where we discuss styling, logistics, important elements, and the stories you want your portraits to tell.

Whether you need an authentic headshot, a full set of branding images for your business, a one-of a kind maternity/baby coffee table art book, or a commissioned family portrait professionally framed over your mantel, our boutique portrait process provides comprehensive guidance from start to finish.

During the photoshoot, you’ll be pampered with hair and makeup to match your desired look, ensuring you feel your best. The session is fully guided to bring your vision to life, with a focus on authenticity. I encourage you to be yourself, capturing natural expressions and emotions without any forced smiles.

Two weeks after your photoshoot, we’ll have a selection and ordering appointment to review the images together and choose the final ones for your portrait project or commissioned artwork. This final step allows us to connect once more and ensure the results align perfectly with your vision.
In essence, my process is about co-creating meaningful portraits and art that resonates with you and your loved ones, from initial consultation to the final artwork. It’s a journey we embark on together, with authenticity and creativity leading the way.

The attention to detail in your studio, from the professional lighting equipment to the local goodies, is impressive. How do these amenities contribute to the overall atmosphere and experience?

Thank you for noticing the small details! In my studio, every element, from the professional lighting equipment to the local goodies, is carefully chosen to enhance the overall atmosphere and experience for each client during their portrait sessions.

When it comes to lighting equipment, I believe in the power of shaping light to elevate the creative process. Having a variety of lighting modifiers and equipment allows me to tailor the lighting precisely to capture the mood and essence of each individual or family.

As for the goodies, I’m passionate about supporting my local community. That’s why I source fresh flowers, candles, incense, tea, and an assortment of baked goods from nearby businesses, adding a touch of local charm and warmth to the studio environment.

And let’s not forget about the seating! I have a soft spot for unique chairs, so you’ll find a variety of comfy seats—from vintage to modern and everything in between—these can be used as props or just a place to sit, relax and feel at home during your session.

Overall, these amenities contribute to creating a welcoming and comfortable space where clients can feel pampered, relaxed, and inspired to create beautiful portraits that reflect their unique personalities and stories.

As a mom yourself, you understand the importance of preserving family memories. How does your own experience as a parent influence your approach to capturing moments for your clients?

As a mom myself, I am passionate about using photography as a medium to preserve our passions, our legacy and the relationships and people that matter the most. It’s not just about capturing moments or expressions; it’s about immortalizing the essence of who we are, both as an individual and as a family unit.

Reflecting on my own journey, I realize how I used to be the mom hiding behind the lens, capturing every moment but rarely being present in the frame myself. It was a period where I didn’t exist, and I often wondered what memories my children would have of me if I didn’t actively participate in those captured moments. This realization sparked a profound shift in my perspective.

Through my own ongoing journey of self-discovery, self-love, and authenticity, I’ve come to understand the importance of existing in photographs—for myself, for my children, and for future generations. I’ve learned that being a subject in front of the camera is not merely a chore but an opportunity to share a part of myself that will outlive me.

In the age of digital photography, the value of printed portraits can sometimes be overlooked. How do you emphasize the significance of printed photographs to your clients, and what options do you offer for displaying and preserving their images?

In a time where digital photos are ever-present, the lasting value of printed portraits can often be overlooked. However, I stronlgy believe that the true essence of a photograph is best appreciated when it’s physically present in our lives, whether held in hand or displayed proudly in our home.
Digital images, though convenient, are fleeting and often forgotten amidst countless files. In contrast, printed portraits are timeless treasures that create lasting memories and emotional connections. I explain to my clients that a digital image is incomplete until it’s printed and cherished as a tangible piece of art.

To highlight this, I offer a range of premium products such as modern, vintage and timeless wall art, coffee table art books, and handcrafted keepsake boxes, each designed with care to enhance home decor and become family heirlooms. Printed photographs also provide psychological benefits, fostering self-esteem and a deeper sense of connection to our loved ones.

I encourage clients to be selective and intentional about which images to print, focusing on those that hold the most significance. This approach ensures that each printed portrait is a meaningful keepsake to be treasured for years to come.

We like a good pivot story here at Chicago North Shore Moms. What did you do before starting this business? How did you train to become the accomplished photographer that you are today?

Before professional portrait photography, I pursued a career in accounting within the corporate sector. However, the journey of motherhood sparked a profound transformation within me. Through the process of pregnancy and childbirth, I discovered a newfound passion for creativity and purpose.
Transitioning into the world of photography, I embarked on a self-taught path, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of professional photography mentors. My dedication to continuous growth led me to immerse myself in various workshops, conferences, and classes, constantly refining my craft.
My commitment to excellence has been recognized through Portrait Masters and Professional Photographers of America, reflecting my dedication to professionalism and mastery in the field. Engaging in mentorship programs and actively participating in associations like the Professional Photographers of America and the National Association of Portrait & Child Photographers further enrich my journey as a photographer.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about yourself or your photography business?

Certainly! I’d love to share more about a series of special portrait projects close to my heart. These series are ongoing opportunities to create special portraits. My “Celebrate Culture Series” is a project that honors the rich tapestry of traditions and heritage. Through capturing the beauty of traditional clothing, ceremonies, and cultural practices, this photoshoot aims to preserve and celebrate the rich diversity of cultures in our local communities.
The “Tween & Teen Empowerment Series” is a photoshoot dedicated to nurturing the confidence and self-esteem of young individuals. By highlighting their unique passions and interests, these sessions aim to empower tweens and teens to embrace their true selves and celebrate their journey of self-discovery. Lastly, “40 Over 40 Series” is a testament to the enduring beauty, strength, and wisdom of women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. Through these portraits, we redefine beauty standards and celebrate the depth and character that comes with age.
