Chicago North Shore Moms is thrilled to introduce Reese Gluskin, a bright and imaginative 10-year-old Northbrook author who just published her debut children’s book, It’s Raining Socks. What began as a sweet COVID-era Zoom connection with an adult author blossomed into a years-long creative mentorship that helped Reese bring her dream of writing a book to life.
We are honored and excited to share her journey, her creativity, and the community sock drive inspired by her book! Reese will celebrate her book launch at a community event at Northbrook’s Book Bin on Monday, December 8, 2025 from 6-7 PM featuring:
- A live interview with the young author
- Signed copies of It’s Raining Socks
- A sock drive benefiting unhoused neighbors in the community
Guests are encouraged to bring new socks to help “make it rain kindness” this winter. Now, let’s welcome Reese to the spotlight!
Hi Reese! Congratulations on becoming a young author and philanthropist! How did this begin?
Hi! In preschool I read a book called Ann and the Raven by and fell in love with it. One day, we met over Zoom. She was really, really kind, helpful and really supportive. Now she’s kind of like family to me!
How cool that you were able to speak with a published book author! What inspired you to write your book, It’s Raining Socks, and how did the idea first pop into your imagination?
The idea sort of came up as Ann and I were talking and wondering, “where do all the missing socks go?” That’s how we came up with the idea, and made it into a book.
What was it like to create a book together, even though you live far apart and are different ages?
It was magical and now I’m an author, yay! I’m kind of happy she’s a lot older than me to help me and keep this professional. And because we live so far away from each other, we have to Zoom. I hope we can meet each other in real life. We usually email, so that helps us communicate.
What was the hardest part of writing a book at age 9?
Coming up with the ideas and then the title, honestly! We had to research a bunch of different names; Ann had originally named the document of the draft as “It’s Raining Socks” and we were fluttering over different ideas. I had brought up “It’s Raining Socks” again and we used it!
Your book launch on Monday, December 8 includes a sock drive inspired by your story. How can we pitch in?
Yes! Please come to my book launch at the Book Bin in Northbrook on Monday, December 8 from 6-7 PM! We are also going to celebrate the book at the JCC Northbrook’s community event on Friday, December 19. At both events, we will collect new socks for the unhoused. Please come!! You can message my mom on Instagram to RSVP and for all of the details (@Taryn_tgbe).

Now that you’re officially a published author, do you have any advice for other kids who dream of writing their own books someday?
Honestly, what I’ve been saying, is if you have the right people and the right amount of help and the right amount of love for books and writing, and support, and help, then you can do it! Age is not a huge part of this. What I would say is, before you find an illustrator, write the whole thing but honestly, you can do it!
What’s next for you, young writer?
Writing more books!
