Small Business Spotlight: Meet Dr. Kerri Nevin, Psy.D the MenoPsychologist! - Chicago North Shore Moms

If you’ve ever felt like your body and mood suddenly changed overnight and you couldn’t figure out why, Dr. Kerri Nevin, Psy.D wants you to know you’re not alone… she’s lived it herself. After experiencing a frozen shoulder, unexplained weight gain, and mood shifts, Dr. Kerri was eventually diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and realized perimenopause was quietly behind it all. Through intentional nutrition and mind-body techniques designed to support her nervous system, she was able to reverse her Hashimoto’s diagnosis — and that journey transformed everything in her life both personally and professionally.

That personal awakening led this Bannockburn-based Doctor of Clinical Psychology to evolve her nearly 30-year practice into something deeply personal and purposeful — becoming “The MenoPsychologist,” blending her clinical expertise with Mayo Clinic-certified wellness coaching to help women navigate midlife with clarity and confidence. We’re so excited to introduce her to the Chicago North Shore Moms community with the goal of providing all my perimenopause and menopause mamas a little hope… and relief. Welcome, Dr. Kerri!

Small Business Spotlight: Meet Dr. Kerri Nevin, Psy.D the MenoPsychologist!

Hi Dr. Kerri! Give us a quick snapshot of you and your life right now.

Hi Ellie, I live in Lincolnshire, and my days are very full. I’m of Doctor of Clinical Psychology in private practice with my husband, Dr. Paul Nevin, and see patients in our office in Bannockburn. We’ve been in private practice together for nearly 30 years. Within the last several years, my focus has been on educating women in perimenopause/menopause. I host events for women in midlife and am very focused on wellness-both mind/body. I received a certification from the Mayo Clinic as a wellness coach helping women make better decisions about their health.

Tell us about your family. What does motherhood look like in your house these days?

I’ve been very happily married to my husband Paul for nearly 28 years. I am a Mom to three adult boys, Matt age 25, Josh, age 23, and Conor, age 19. My boys are grown, so they are self sufficient. Matt is going into more education in the Fall, Josh is in graduate school school studying to be a therapist, and Conor will be finishing up his sophomore year in college. It’s still pretty busy at our house.

What’s something about you that might surprise people—outside of your work and mom life?

I’m rather obsessed with dance aerobics, and I could get lost in my closet for days putting outfits together.

Where are your go-to spots right now?

I love going out to eat with our boys! DeNucci’s in Highland Park is an absolute fave and where we go as a family when Conor is back from college. A coffee spot for girls’ gathering is Cafe De Oro in Riverwoods – it’s so homey there. Weekend getaways with my husband are the best, and we love The Maxwell Mansion in Lake Geneva – another favorite of mine!

What are you loving lately?

Favorite show – Paradise on Hulu. I’m also obsessed with Love Story John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.

I also love Fairy Hair (hair tinsel) from the fabulous women of Finkelpott Fairy Hair. I now can’t live without it. Life is too short not to sparkle!

What’s something you can’t leave the house without?

Can’t leave the house without curling my eyelashes and using mascara – Lancôme’s Definicils. I also must have my water bottle always infused with citrus (lime) to mineralize my water to support my brain and body health.

What’s something about motherhood, work, or balancing both that you wish more people talked about honestly?

I wish people talked more open and honestly about how necessary it is to “fill your tank first” before everyone else’s. As Moms, that’s a hard one, but if you do it, you’ll be so much more available to be there for your kids, and everyone else.

Is there a quote, mantra, or mindset that grounds you when things feel chaotic?

Yes, I really love Louise L. Hay’s affirmation, “All is well, everything is working out for my highest good, out of this situation only good will come, and I am safe.” Just love Louise.

I also love the mantra, “Good things are constantly happening for me.” This mantra trains my brain to look for the good in my life, and I always find it.

It’s time to get down to business! Please introduce Heart Light and The MenoPsychologist. What kind of practice is this and who do you serve?

Heart Light Psychological Services is a private practice my husband and I started after graduate school in 1998, and we’ve been providing individual, couple’s and family psychotherapy ever since. My interests have evolved with my practice, and given my
struggles with perimenopause, I’ve since directed my focus to working with women in midlife facing the challenges of peri/menopause. I’ve created a new aspect of myself known as “The Menopsychologist,” which combines my knowledge as a therapist with the information every woman needs to know about the perimenopause transition in order to
empower women to thrive through midlife and beyond.

Did your own personal struggle inspire this practice?

100%. I woke up one day with a frozen shoulder, and learned about the “Musculoskeletal Syndrome of Menopause” which occurs due to the loss of estrogen while going through the perimenopause transition. I went down the rabbit hole with all
this information, and subsequently created the “Peri Power Hour.” The Peri Power Hour is a meeting once a month at my office, geared toward educating women about all things perimenopause and how to best optimize mind/body health and wellness.

Tell us more about the autoimmune disease you were diagnosed with. What happened that led you to get testing done and when were you diagnosed?

I had a breast thermogram (a non-invasive technique used to identify heat in the body) and was told that there was something going on with my thyroid. An ultrasound determined there was nothing wrong, so I didn’t pursue more testing. I was gaining
weight, and my mood was off, so I went to a functional medicine doctor who diagnosed me with full blown Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, or an inflammation of the thyroid gland the following year. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was also going through
perimenopause. When I look back, I can see that the Hashimoto’s disease was putting jet engines on my perimenopause symptoms.

What ways does your personal training in wellness impact how you’ve changed your lifestyle for the better.

Given my training as a psychologist and at the Mayo Clinic, I’ve learned essential techniques to support achieving the goals that are important to me. I’ve learned so much about the absolute necessity of nutrition, in combination with nervous system regulating tools to set myself up for success.

What are 3 things you’re doing different now that helps you feel much better than you did (on most days)?

Three things I’m doing differently for my health include:

  1. Choose food with a conscious intention to support my mind/body – mostly organic, fruits/veggies-mostly vegan but I will eat fish on the weekends.
  2. Eat every three hours – this was incredibly life changing for me, regulating my mood and my capacity to show up.
  3. Prioritize moving my body in ways that inspire me specifically through Pvolve in Deerfield and Dance Cardio Aerobics. The movement and connection with others in these classes have been key in making me feel so fulfilled.

And, it’s okay to splurge with my diet because it’s all about balance.

We are always chasing the proverbial, “live your best self” dream. How do you help women feel like we can feel better without that pressure?

You can only really do one thing well at a time. The key is to start with getting clarity about what’s important to you-answering the question, “What connects you to positive feelings?” Then, choosing one step, with conscious intention, and evaluating your
progress. It’s truly about how you feel more than anything. Knowing you have agency over your own life to make change, and that it can only happen with one decision at a time. And compassion for yourself, above all else.

Tell us about your in-person events!

It is my passion and my pleasure to educate women in the perimenopause transition. I offer a monthly group, entitled, The Peri Power Hour at my office, 2201 Waukegan Rd. Suite 145 in Bannockburn the third Thursday of every month. The next Peri Power Hour is 4/16/26.

I am also offering two additional pop up events:
