How Cultures Influence Color in Design
Words by Ava Markoutsas, owner of ABLAZE Design Group

Color is a powerful tool in design, influencing emotions, setting the tone, and creating a sense of space. However, the significance of color extends far beyond aesthetics. At ABLAZE Design Group, we understand that color carries deep cultural meanings and historical significance that can shape design choices in profound ways for some of our clients. Below are a few examples of how cultures influence color in design. And please join us at ABLAZE Design Group in Highwood on June 27th for a FREE and fun color workshop led by color specialist Janet Miller of Sherwin Williams. Learn more + RSVP here.

Symbolism: Colors have unique symbolism and associations in different cultures, rooted in traditions, beliefs, and history. For example, Iin Western cultures, white symbolizes purity and weddings, while in some parts of Asia, it represents mourning and death. In Chinese culture, red is a symbol of luck and prosperity, whereas in many Western cultures, it signifies love and passion.

Emotions: Colors can evoke specific emotions. In Western cultures, yellow is linked to happiness, joy, and warmth.

Protection: Some cultures use colors for protection. In Middle Eastern cultures, blue is often used on front doors to ward off evil spirits.

Religion: Religious connotations also influence color choices: In Islam, green is considered holy and symbolizes fertility while in Hinduism, red is associated with certain gods and rituals.

Social: Social trends also play a significant role in color palette selection. Influenced by fashion, technology, art, and lifestyle, these trends can guide designers in creating spaces that feel contemporary and relevant. For example, the growing emphasis on environmental awareness has led to a preference for natural and earthy tones. The trend towards minimalism favors neutral colors like whites, grays, and beiges, creating a clean and uncluttered aesthetic.

Wellness and Mindfulness: Soft pastels, soothing blues, and earthy greens are popular for creating tranquil and relaxing environments.

Bold and Vibrant Expression: Rich jewel tones and contrasting color combinations reflect a desire for self-expression and creativity.

Cultural Diversity and Inclusivity: Designers are increasingly incorporating a wider range of colors inspired by different cultures, celebrating diversity and creating inclusive spaces.

If you would like to understand more about how to incorporate these cultural and social trends into your home projects, we are hosting a free event at ABLAZE with color expert Janet Miller of Sherwin Williams.
