Battle Cupcake: A Taste Buds Kitchen Birthday Party | Chicago North Shore Moms

This year my daughter’s trip around the sun culminated in double digits – a milestone in so many ways! My daughter had been to a few workshops at Taste Buds Kitchen throughout the years and always loved the creative experience and the delicious reward. So, it became an easy decision for us to host her special birthday party here! In this informative recount of our TBK birthday party, I’ll be gushing about how easy and clear the booking process was, and painting a picture of the process. And supporting this mom-owned local business is a bonus in my book!

Spoiler alert, this party couldn’t have been easier on the parents hosting, and we enjoyed seeing all of the hyper-focused and super happy faces throughout our soiree!

Book it!

Part of what I personally loved about booking this Taste Buds Kitchen birthday party was how almost all of the answers to my questions are provided on the booking page without having to coordinate a chat with a staff member. You have access to:

  • the booking calendar
  • the cooking and baking themes
  • allergy options
  • add-ons like lemonade, aprons and party favors

After booking the party, I received a friendly call from Maggie to confirm one of the 20 available cooking or baking themes to help my daughter make a final decision.

Now, my daughter has a wicked sweet tooth so, of course, we chose the Battle Cupcake theme. Plus each child would get to take home four cupcakes to enjoy – goodie bag done and done!

Getting started – it’s time to mix it up!

The guests arrived on time (ok on time-ish) and it was time to get started! And Chef Patti commanded the room. It was IMPRESSIVE! She gave the simple step by step instructions and skillfully led a group of nine and 10 year olds through the process of putting together the cupcake ingredients, including a dye for the batter. They poured, cracked, mixed and scooped the batter into the trays.

Halloween was the theme, so orange and gray batter was mixed! Why not, right?

That buttercream frosting!

The cupcakes are baking and it’s time to make the seriously, ridiculously delicious frosting from scratch (pro tip: you get the actual recipe after the party). They even got to pick a frosting flavor. The guests did great! There were strong opinions voiced, heard and respected. And off they went!

After mixing the frosting they decided on three frosting colors. The guests mixed the colors themselves and skillfully bagged the colors into easy to use piping bags. The TBK culinary crew then tied them off with a special gadget.

Decorating – who will win TBK battle cupcake Halloween edition?

Next, the guests took to the decorating bar to each pick their own decorating items. From eyeballs to oreo cookies for the dirt, the girls took their creativity to a new level.

The frosting comes first, and the TBK culinary crew did a great job explaining how to frost a cupcake from the outside in.

To sum it all up! LOVE!

We didn’t really have a competition here – the Halloween inspired cupcakes were ALL very fun, creative and festively Halloween. I really enjoyed seeing all of the happy faces (even masked). It was a really nice time, easy for me, and most of all, the birthday girl felt so special and celebrated! I was grateful that there was little work needed from me at the party (baking is not my wheelhouse). And I appreciated that this was a very COVID safe option. Lastly, OMG that frosting!

Pro tip: Consider co-hosting a TBK birthday party with another birthday boy or girl!
