Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns @ Chicago Botanic Garden
October 14, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
An event every day that begins at 6:00 pm, repeating until October 18, 2020
Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns, featuring a display of expertly carved pumpkins, returns to the Chicago Botanic Garden for 10 evenings in advance of Halloween. More than 1,000 hand-carved, real pumpkins lit with LED lights will light up the night and line the family-friendly outdoor path in a beautiful fall setting.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors to experience our annual fall tradition at the Garden,” said Jodi Zombolo, associate vice president, Visitor Events & Programs. “This event is a great opportunity to spend an evening outdoors with friends and family in an entertaining way.”
Throughout the festive path, there will be approximately 80 ghoulish pumpkins that are as large as 150 pounds, and are intricately carved with themes including Dia de los Muertos, heroes of COVID-19, spooky celebrations from around the world, and women of Chicago. This year’s route has been modified to keep visitor safety in mind. New procedures include limited capacity per timeslot, a one-way trail with a separate entrance and exit, and extra space between pumpkins.
Artists for the New York-based company Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns spend 8-10 hours to illustrate and then 10-20 hours to paint and carve each large pumpkin. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch live carving demonstrations and enjoy costumed entertainment along the path.
This year’s event runs 10 evenings from Wednesday, October 14, through Sunday, October 18, and Wednesday, October 21, through Sunday, October 25. The Garden will close each day at 5 p.m. and will reopen at 6 p.m. for this special event. Visitors can purchase timed tickets for entry between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Last entry is at 10 p.m. and the event ends at 10:30 p.m.
